The Tools You Need for Those End-of-Summer Projects

The terrific weather we all enjoy during the summer is wonderfully relaxing, but it can herald busy days ahead. It’s nice enough to enjoy a world of outdoor activities, vacations, and lazy days in the sun. On the other hand, that window of sunlight is also often the only time a variety of outdoor projects can be completed. It’s also the warmth window in which cold weather preparation projects, to increase comfort and lower power bills, need to be completed. Here are a few summer projects to jump on while the weather permits, and the tools you’ll need to complete them.

Building a Raised Bed Fall Veggie Garden

Some veggies don’t thrive the heat of summer and can’t be planted for the milder spring weather during the winter. That means one of the most fruitful (sometimes literally) gardening projects for the growing of things you can eat is a raised bed for fall vegetables. Raised beds are also great for maximizing square foot gardening yield if you don’t have a lot of space. For a raised bed, you’ll want a hand cart or 2 wheel dolly for transporting the lumber, compost, and other components for the growing medium, and a cordless drill for the wood screws.

Fixing a Ripped Window or Door Screen

Believe it or not, fixing a bad window or door screen is pretty simple. Once the old screen has been removed from the frame, it’s a matter of cutting a new screen to fit the frame and securing it with screen spline. The tools necessary for screen-fixing include a utility knife, an awl, a concave/convex roller tool, a good pair of scissors or shears, and a set of screwdrivers.

Building a Firewood Shed

Building a firewood shed can be a relatively simple affair—a series of pallets laid horizontally on concrete blocks, with vertical pallet walls, and a tarp. It can also be a more involved task involving building a plank floor, support beams, a corrugated tin or fiberglass roof, and fitted plywood walls. Either way, you’ll want a good hand truck or hand cart for carrying your supplies. In addition, you may need a hand saw or circular saw, a hammer and nails, wood screws, a cordless drill, a level, a wood chisel and rasp, colored twine for alignment, construction adhesive, and digging tools. The hand truck is also a great tool for moving firewood from the shed into your home.

Build a Fire Pit

A terrific DIY fire pit is a lovely addition to a backyard for cool fall evenings with toasted Marshmallows. It can be more involved than other projects. You’ll likely need concrete and mortar, fire bricks, rebar, 2x4s and 2x6s, gravel and lava rock, and some L-brackets. The wood can be shaped with a relatively inexpensive reciprocating saw and joined into panels with some wood screws. So the tools necessary for a great backyard fire pit can be as minimal as a drill, a reciprocating saw, a wheelbarrow for mixing concrete, a trowel, and a hammer.
