3 Ways to Get More Out of Limited Warehouse Space

No matter your industry, warehouse space is a precious commodity. It can be just as valuable as what’s stored in the warehouse and only becomes more valuable as space becomes more limited. If you’re faced with a space shortage, what do you do?

Acquiring more space may be an option eventually, but before you get there, it’s time to strategize and rethink your warehouse layout. It might be time to put your heavy duty hand cart to work and rethink how your team uses its available space.

Audit the Layout of Your Warehouse

Whether you do it yourself or hire an outside firm, the first step is to audit your warehouse layout and available space. One common reason warehouses “fill up” is poor space management and logistics.

This audit helps you identify areas of the warehouse that are over- or underutilized. This may be wall space or vertical space. Certain spaces may be underutilized simply because you don’t have the equipment or infrastructure to use those spaces (vertical space being a chief example).

Start Using Underutilized Space

If your audit identifies underutilized space in your warehouse, it’s time to change that. This may require infrastructure upgrades. For example, if your warehouse has unused vertical space, you may need to install additional pallet racking or a mezzanine system.

Exact solutions depend on the space available. Hand trucks are ideal for floor-level movement, but in certain warehouse situations, reliable vertical lift modules or carousels can be ideal. Other situations may call for picker or platform lifts, or powered stair climbing hand trucks.

Go Double Deep on the Main Floor

Another option to maximize warehouse space is to consider floor space density. It’s not uncommon for warehouse inventories to be organized in a single layer. This makes accessing that inventory simple. However, the space behind that “first layer” of inventory is underutilized.

Reorganize your warehouse space to make the most of the “second layer.” Investing in dollies for moving heavy equipment can simplify access to each layer of inventory or equipment.
