Equipment You Might Not Have Considered to Help Your Commercial Greenhouse Thrive

Running a greenhouse is hard work, but it’s a labor of love. If you’re running a greenhouse, you’re likely familiar with the tools and equipment that work well for you. However, there may be tools and pieces of equipment that can improve the efficiency, production, and customer experience that you may not have considered. Whether it’s the right hand cart selection for warehouse and delivery workers, platform trucks to help customers move purchases, or smart storage options, sometimes it’s the details you hadn’t considered that can make the difference.

Platform Truck
The Right Storage

Storing inventory can be much more complex for greenhouses than other forms of retail. Most of your inventory is alive, after all, and needs to be kept in certain conditions. Then there’s all the additional material that needs dry storage conditions. Half-used bags of soil, fertilizer, substrates, pesticides, mulch, backstock, labeling supplies, a whole world of flora, and so much more. Don’t underestimate the need for dependable, convenient storage. Consider solid, stackable plastic bins that feature sealable lids to keep their contents dry. To maximize space, think about installing overhead plant storage racks above your ground level shelves, turning unused vertical space into more revenue potential. Additionally, include several wheeled shelves for moving selections of plants outdoors during the day and back in at night, or for displaying plants and other stock by the check-out area.

The Right Transportation Equipment

Just as the greenhouse business requires an investment in a variety of storage options, it also necessitates a robust suite of transportation solutions. More so than in many retail businesses, those shopping at (or restocking in) a greenhouse are likely going to be purchasing items of a decent weight. That’s particularly true if they’re buying more than a single plant or a few supplies. A large plant, its container, and water-saturated soil can be quite heavy. Larger plants and saplings are generally a considerable challenge to move. For the greenhouse staff, that means having at least a few hand trucks, hand carts, and a wheelbarrow available. Customers will appreciate the availability of platform trucks for larger purchases, and baskets for smaller ones.

The Right Furniture

Some additional furnishings can go a long way for customer experience. Simple furniture inclusions that can help your greenhouse stand out include a few benches and maybe a table in a quiet section. Investing in a water feature as a focus to provide a soothing ambiance is a great touch. Planting, tending, growing, and nurturing plants should be a relaxing, satisfying, fulfilling part of life, and an improvised Zen garden is a good way to remind customers of that.

The Right Composting Equipment

If there’s one certainty when running a greenhouse, it’s that you’re guaranteed to produce a whole lot of organic waste. Dead and dying plants, soil, trimmings, old mulch, and a great deal more. Simply throwing out all of that plant and organic matter is a waste when it can be composted. Buying or building at least one sizeable composting enclosure is worth it for a number of reasons. It’s environmentally sound, the compost can be recycled back into the other plants in the greenhouse, and if there’s enough of it, it can be sold to customers. Helping out the planet and making money from stuff you were going to throw away, it’s win-win.
